KanjiKanji

————————————————————————————————————–
Random Kanji Knowledge: Kanji is a complicated means of conveying language. With literally thousands of symbols that have different readings depending on context, the layers of complexity can prove overwhelming. However, beyond the squiggly lines lies sophistication to those patient and diligent enough to learn. Kanji is really cool in this regard.

Today’s kanji is 元気, which is read as genki (gehn-key).

元 means “origin.”

気 refers to the “spirit/mind/mood.”

Combined together, you can think of 元気 as the “original mood” in the sense that humans are supposed to default to being healthy, right?

In fact, one of the first things you’re taught in Japanese class is how to ask if someone is feeling well.

元気ですか? (Genki desu ka?) —> How are you (feeling)?

元気 is also used in the context of someone who is lively or full of energy.

The stroke order for 元気 is shown below.

Daily NhanSense – Day 2

Daily NhanSense: Every day, I will blog about something that comes to mind. My goal is to practice writing about my hobbies, my interests, my opinions and so forth.

Day 2′s Topic: Personal philosophy.

I’m not the kind of guy who wears necklaces, but I constantly carry one with me each day. It sounds a bit weird, so please allow me to explain.

I found the necklace below at an anime shop in my local mall. It was cheap at just $5, so why the heck not?

DSC03322

Though I don’t like wearing necklaces around my neck, I have made it a habit to have this trinket inside my left pocket throughout the day. I have been doing so for the past few months now.

The necklace has the Chinese symbol for “success,” which can be read as “gong” in Chinese or other ways like “kou” in Japanese.

If you look at the 功 symbol carefully, the radicals (as in the basic stroke shapes that make up the symbol itself) represent “work” and “strength” respectively, both of which are absolutely necessary for attaining success in anything.

One does not simply find success without putting in the work, and, likewise, one cannot be strong enough to get through said work without adequate strength.
Success
The 功 symbol just conveys so much. It resonates with my personal philosophy in life that you need to work hard to get what you want.

I have grown very attached to this necklace. There are times I just find myself patting my left pocket to make sure it is there. Like, I will in fact flip out if I ever lose this thing, even it was just only $5 and it can be easily replaced.

When I need a reminder of what I stand for, I bring the necklace out to stare at the 功 to keep myself motivated.

The notion of achieving success, of being able to fulfill all of my desires for 功, keep me moving forward with a heart brimming full of willpower and determination.

Remember.

Work and strength go hand-in-hand.

Never forget this.
